The Military Disney Tips Monthly Newsletter 🎃 Hello and welcome to this month's newsletter!☕ From Steve’s Desk October has been a busy month at Military Disney Tips, and much of our attention has been on helping military families make better decisions about their upcoming Disney vacations. The biggest question right now is when Disney will announce the 2027 Armed Forces Salute. I've been following these announcements since 2009, and we're approaching the time of year when I expect to hear something. I've put together both my predictions for the announcement and an updated guide to what military families should expect when it finally happens. If you've been through one of these announcements before, you know things don't always go smoothly! We've also done some deeper research this month. We analyzed nearly a year's worth of Disney Cruise Line military discounts to see whether waiting for a military rate is really a good strategy. And we've continued taking a hard look at Shades of Green, including how its rooms compare with Disney Deluxe Resorts, whether it remains a good value for higher-rate categories, and the upcoming addition of dog-friendly rooms. On the general Disney side, there's plenty to explore, too. I've added new guides to Magic Kingdom's boat transportation, Stormalong Bay, and several favorite EPCOT and BoardWalk locations. I also had some fun digging into the history of the Magic Kingdom's underground tunnels—and why the term "Utilidors" isn't quite the insider terminology many people think it is. Having worked down there myself ("in the tunnel"), that was a particularly interesting one to research. It's a good mix of timely military information, practical vacation planning, and a little Disney history this month. I hope you enjoy catching up! Steve ⭐ Featured Stories of the Month 📆 When Will Disney Announce the 2027 Armed Forces Salute? Nothing has been announced yet, but based on recent history, I’m watching two windows especially closely: the third full week of October and Veterans Day through November 13. The new article also looks at whether some successor to the 2026 Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket could appear—and what military families should do now rather than simply waiting for Disney. 👉 When Will Disney Announce the 2027 Armed Forces Salute? When Disney announces the next Armed Forces Salute, the announcement itself is only the beginning. After covering these renewals since 2009, I’ve learned not to assume Disney’s phone lines, websites, Cast Members, reservation systems, and military ticket channels will all be ready at the same time. I’ve completely updated my announcement-day guide with what can go wrong, what you should do when it does, why your existing room reservation is not really “converted” to the military rate, and why Shades of Green is often the best place to turn if you need Walt Disney World Salute Tickets immediately. 👉 What to Expect on the Day Disney Announces the Disney Armed Forces Salute 🦮 Shades of Green Is Adding Dog-Friendly Rooms Beginning November 1, 2026, Shades of Green will offer a limited number of dog-friendly rooms for guests traveling with up to two dogs. The rooms must be reserved by phone, dogs count toward room occupancy, and pets will remain restricted from several resort areas. We also look at the biggest unanswered questions, including how the rooms will be cleaned between stays and whether dog-friendly inventory will be kept separate. 👉 Read about the new Shades of Green dog-friendly rooms 📆 Military leave, deployments, TDYs, and changing orders can disrupt even a carefully planned Disney vacation. Military families have to plan Disney vacations with one uncertainty most travelers do not: leave and orders can change. This new guide looks at what happens when that occurs after you have already booked the trip. I cover Disney Room Only versus package cancellation rules, rescheduling instead of canceling, what happens to unused Salute and regular military tickets, Shades of Green, Universal Freedom Passes, and what to do if the eligible military member can no longer travel. 👉 What Happens to Your Disney Vacation When Military Leave or Orders Change? ⚖️ Shades of Green vs. Disney Deluxe Resort Rooms Shades of Green rooms are larger than every standard Disney Deluxe Resort hotel room—but room size is only part of the story. I compared the rooms themselves, including space, beds, bathroom layouts, balconies, views, desks, Wi-Fi, and overall room functionality. The result is a much closer comparison than Shades of Green versus Disney Moderate rooms. 👉 Shades of Green vs. Disney Deluxe Resort Rooms 🪖 Military Planning Tips⚖️ Which Disney Resort Category Is the Best Alternative to Shades of Green? One of this month's new planning guides tackles a question I hear from Shades of Green guests who are thinking about trying a Disney-owned resort: which category is actually the closest alternative? 👉 My answer is the Disney Moderates. See why. 🚢 Disney Cruise Line Military Discount History My Disney Cruise Military Rate Study One of the hardest Disney Cruise Line questions for military families is whether to book the cruise they want now or wait and hope Disney releases a military rate. We've finally done the research to give that question a much better answer. Military Disney Tips analyzed nearly a year of Disney Cruise Line military-rate listings, including when the discounts appeared, how large they were, which cruises received them, and how often they showed up when compared with Disney's actual sailing schedule. The results changed some of my assumptions—and reinforced one very important piece of planning advice. 👉 Should You Wait for a Disney Cruise Military Rate? We Analyzed the Data 💰 Is Shades of Green Still a Good Value for Category 2 and 3 Guests? Shades of Green has a reputation as one of the best lodging values at Walt Disney World, but that reputation does not apply equally to every rate category. Category II and III guests pay substantially more than Category I, and at those higher rates Disney Value and Moderate Resorts can become much more competitive. Our new guide looks at the FY27 rates, the different Disney discounts Category II and III guests may qualify for, what Shades of Green still gives you for the money, and when Disney may actually be the better value. 👉 Is Shades of Green Still a Good Value for Category 2 and 3 Guests? ❓ Who Qualifies for Disney Armed Forces Salute and the Universal Orlando Military Freedom Pass? Disney and Universal both offer deeply discounted military promotional tickets, but their eligibility rules are not the same. Our new guide compares the Disney Armed Forces Salute with the Universal Orlando Military Freedom Pass, including the important differences for military spouses, 100% disabled veterans, PHS and NOAA members, Department of War civilians, and other veterans. It also explains what regular discounted military-ticket options may still be available if you do not qualify for either special promotional program. 👉 Who Qualifies for Disney Armed Forces Salute and the Universal Orlando Military Freedom Pass? 🏨 Disney World Lodging for a Military Family of Six Our new comparison looks at Shades of Green, All-Star Music, Art of Animation, and Port Orleans–Riverside, including prices, beds, bathrooms, space, and the risk of booking two rooms that don't connect. 👉 Best Walt Disney World Lodging for a Military Family of 6: Suites vs. Two Rooms 🆕 New Blog Posts & Pages This Month🍷 Les Vins des Chefs de France at EPCOT One of the easiest adult-beverage stops around World Showcase is also one whose name many guests probably don't know. Les Vins des Chefs de France is the small stand along the promenade at the front of EPCOT's France Pavilion. It's best known for the Grand Marnier Orange Slush and Grey Goose Citron Lemon Slush, although you'll also find French wine, Champagne, and beer. 👉 Les Vins des Chefs de France at EPCOT: Wine, Champagne, Beer & Frozen Slushes 🛥️ Magic Kingdom Water Transportation Magic Kingdom-area boat transportation looks simple until you actually need to use it. The Transportation and Ticket Center has its ferryboats, the Polynesian and Grand Floridian share one launch, Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness each have their own Magic Kingdom routes, and the Contemporary participates in a completely different Bay Lake service. Our new guide puts the whole system together from a guest-planning perspective, including where to find the docks, what the route colors mean, when a boat is the best choice, and when you should walk or use the monorail instead. I also brought back some Disney history, including the days when boats carried guests to Discovery Island and the new ferry joining the fleet in 2027. 👉 Magic Kingdom Water Transportation: Every Boat Route and When to Use It 🏊🏻♂️ Stormalong Bay Pool Guide: Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Stormalong Bay is much more than a typical Disney resort pool. The 3-acre complex shared by Disney’s Yacht Club, Beach Club, and Beach Club Villas includes a sand-bottom swimming area, lazy river, quiet coves, sandy beach entry, whirlpool spas, and a 230-foot shipwreck waterslide. I consider it the best resort pool at Walt Disney World, but there are also a few practical things families should know before planning a pool day. 👉 Stormalong Bay Pool Guide: Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club 🥃 AbracadaBar at Disney's BoardWalk AbracadaBar is more than a place to grab a cocktail. This cozy BoardWalk lounge is packed with magician-themed details, antique-style seating, creatively named drinks, and a surprisingly interesting history. I've visited numerous times, and my drink pick remains the Parlor Trick. We also look back at the space's original life as Seashore Sweets, which opened with Disney's BoardWalk in 1996. 👉 AbracadaBar at Disney's BoardWalk: Drinks, Menu & History 💰 Is Shades of Green Still a Good Value for Category 2 and 3 Guests? Shades of Green has a reputation as one of the best lodging values at Walt Disney World, but that reputation does not apply equally to every rate category. Category II and III guests pay substantially more than Category I, and at those higher rates Disney Value and Moderate Resorts can become much more competitive. Our new guide looks at the FY27 rates, the different Disney discounts Category II and III guests may qualify for, what Shades of Green still gives you for the money, and when Disney may actually be the better value. 👉 Is Shades of Green Still a Good Value for Category 2 and 3 Guests? Are They Really Called the Magic Kingdom “Utilidors”? You’ve probably seen social posts explaining that the tunnels beneath the Magic Kingdom are really called the “Utilidors.” I worked in the Magic Kingdom for three years, with my office right on the Tunnel level—and everyone I worked with called it the Tunnel. I never heard the term Utilidoor until a few years ago! So I went looking for where “Utilidor” actually came from. It turns out the word predates Disney, Disney itself has used both terms, and Disney’s own Cast maps provide some particularly interesting evidence. See what the historical record—and an actual Cast Member—says about the Magic Kingdom Utilidors 👉 The Magic Kingdom “Utilidors”? Not Quite the Insider Term You Think It Is 🏬 Mitsukoshi Department Store at EPCOT Mitsukoshi Department Store in EPCOT's Japan Pavilion is one of those places that's worth visiting even if you aren't shopping. It's huge, colorful, and filled with everything from Pokémon, anime merchandise, and Japanese snacks to kimonos, fans, sake sets, and samurai swords. I've put together a new guide covering what you'll find inside and why simply strolling through the store can be part of the EPCOT experience. 👉 Mitsukoshi Department Store at EPCOT 🍷 Wine Shops of EPCOT's World Showcase France, Italy, and Germany each have a wine shop where you can buy much more than bottles to take home. Les Vins de France, Enoteca Castello, and Weinkeller all sell wine by the glass, making them easy stops while touring World Showcase. We compare what makes each different, including France's unadvertised larger pour, Italy's convenient promenade stand, and Germany's beer and liqueur options. 👉 Wine Shops of EPCOT's World Showcase: France, Italy & Germany 🍷 Belle Vue Lounge at Disney's BoardWalk Inn Belle Vue Lounge is tucked just off the BoardWalk Inn lobby and feels much more like a comfortable living room than a traditional hotel bar. We use it constantly—before dinner, after the parks, or whenever we're in the area. We look at the cozy 1930s atmosphere, verandah seating, current drinks, what happened to the old breakfast service, and why the room is useful even before the bar opens. 👉 Belle Vue Lounge at Disney's BoardWalk Inn: Drinks & What to Expect 🔎 See More Military Disney Tips on Google!Google now lets you choose your favorite websites as Preferred Sources, helping you see more of their content in Google Search. The Military Disney Tips Monthly Newsletter Hello and welcome to this month's newsletter! ☕ From Steve’s Desk September turned into a month with a lot of practical planning content—much of it centered on a question I think is more important than simply asking what something costs: Is it worth it for your family?
