Military Disney Tips Monthly Newsletter – September 2026

The Military Disney Tips Monthly Newsletter

Hello and welcome to this month's newsletter!

☕ From Steve’s Desk

September turned into a month with a lot of practical planning content—much of it centered on a question I think is more important than simply asking what something costs: Is it worth it for your family?

That comes through in several of this month’s new articles. We looked at when an expensive Minnie Van ride can actually be money well spent, whether taking an entire resort day makes sense, and how many days you really need at Walt Disney World. We also explored just how much there is to do at Disney resorts when you aren’t in the parks.

On the military side, September was especially busy. I took a look back at the fascinating history of Disney’s Armed Forces Salute—including our family’s experience using Disney’s complimentary Desert Storm tickets in 1991. We also dug into some very practical decisions military families face today: Shades of Green versus Disney Moderate Resorts, the differences between Disneyland and Walt Disney World military tickets, feeding a family at Shades without a kitchen, and sponsoring rooms for family and friends.

There’s plenty more this month, from The Perch at the Grand Floridian and the BoardWalk Snack Stand to a guide that finally translates some of that crazy Disney planning language.

I hope you find something here that makes your next Disney vacation a little easier to plan—and a lot more enjoyable!

🚘 When Is a Minnie Van Actually Worth the Money at Disney World?

Minnie Vans are expensive, but that doesn't mean you should automatically rule them out—or use them everywhere. We look at the situations where paying the premium can genuinely improve your Walt Disney World transportation experience, from Magic Kingdom access and child seats to resort-to-resort trips and families who prefer Disney-operated transportation.

⏳ History of Disney's Armed Forces Salute

The Disney Armed Forces Salute feels permanent today, but its history is anything but straightforward. Disney's special military offers stretch back decades, including the complimentary Desert Storm ticket my family used in 1991, the first Armed Forces Salutes in 2002 and 2003, and the modern program that began in 2009. I've pulled that history together—including the years when no one knew whether Disney would bring the Salute back at all.

⏳ Should You Take a Resort Day at Disney World?

On a longer Walt Disney World trip, one of the best days you schedule may be the one when you never enter a park. Our new guide looks at why a full resort day is different from a midday break, who benefits most, where to place it in the trip, and when giving up a park day simply doesn’t make sense.

🏨 Shades of Green Rooms vs. Disney Moderate Rooms

Shades of Green rooms are considerably larger than traditional Disney Moderate rooms, but the differences go well beyond square footage. We compare sleeping space, bathroom layouts, balconies, privacy, Disney room features, Wi-Fi, pricing, and the Coronado Gran Destino Tower—then break down which room makes the most sense for different families.

⚖️ Shades of Green vs. Disney Moderate Resorts: Which Is Better?

Shades of Green versus a Disney Moderate used to be a fairly simple comparison. It isn't anymore. Caribbean Beach has the Skyliner, Gran Destino Tower changes the room comparison, French Quarter offers a much more compact resort, and Disney pricing can occasionally beat Shades of Green outright. I’ve completely modernized our full-resort comparison to look at the factors that really matter now: price, rooms, transportation, dining, Disney benefits, and which resort fits different kinds of military families.

🎟️ Every Difference Between Disneyland and Walt Disney World Military Tickets

Military tickets at Disneyland and Walt Disney World may sound similar, but the rules are not interchangeable. We compare the major differences in Salute and regular military tickets, including park reservations, ticket lengths, Lightning Lane, expiration, activation, and Walt Disney World’s additional ticket options.

This is especially useful if you know one coast well and are planning your first military Disney trip to the other.

⚖️ How to Feed a Family at Shades of Green

We put together a practical guide for families who want to spend less on food without making their vacation harder. It covers what fits in the room, when grocery delivery makes sense, what the Exchange is best for, easy breakfasts and snacks, microwave realities, and when prepared food is the better value.

🦜 The Perch at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort

The Grand Floridian's famous lobby has a new place to grab a drink. The Perch is a beautiful birdcage-inspired bar offering cocktails, wine, Florida beer, and a specialty nonalcoholic drink. We stopped there during our June trip and put together a Quick Reference Page covering the menu, seating, atmosphere, and the important question: The Perch or Enchanted Rose?

📆 Planning the Right Length Disney World Vacation

How long should you actually stay at Walt Disney World? My starting recommendation for a first trip is about 7 nights with 5 park days and a down day—but there's much more to the answer than simply counting parks.

This guide looks at how much time each park deserves, arrival and departure days, midday breaks, Park Hopper and Lightning Lane, different travel styles, and the special considerations military families have when choosing among Disney's military ticket products.

🎣 Walt Disney World Resort Activities: What You Can Do Without Going to the Parks

A Walt Disney World down day doesn't have to mean sitting in the room wondering what to do.

Disney's resorts offer a surprising amount outside the parks—outdoor movies, campfires, animal experiences, fishing, boating, horseback riding, crafts, Sangria University, fireworks cruises, and much more.

✅ Disney Planning Terms Explained

Disney planning has its own language: ADR, LLMP, 60+10, rope drop, blockouts, DVC, TTC—and military families get even more acronyms and specialized terminology.

This new guide translates the Disney terms you're actually likely to encounter, explains where some of the stranger ones came from, and points out the distinctions that can actually affect your vacation plans.

Ⓜ️ M&M'S at Disney Springs

You don't have to buy anything to enjoy the M&M'S Store at Disney Springs.

We've walked through several times, and the thing that always stands out is the color. The huge Chocolate Wall, bright merchandise displays, and Red and Yellow M&M characters outside make it a fun five-minute stop while exploring the West Side.

Our new Page covers what you'll find inside, where the store is located, how much time you really need, and why it's worth walking through even if you aren't planning to buy candy.

Eligible Shades of Green guests can sponsor rooms for family and friends who could not otherwise stay at the resort. See how many rooms you can sponsor, what rates apply, when the sponsor must be present, and what sponsored guests can do independently after check-in.

🍿 BoardWalk Snack Stand

We've walked past it several times since it opened, and that actually helped answer the most important question: Is there anything here worth making a special trip for?

Our new post covers the menu, exact location, the exclusive Saltwater Taffy Popcorn, and where this little stand fits among all the other BoardWalk food options.
